How to Keep your Dishwasher

How to Keep your Dishwasher

If your Thanksgiving meal seems anything like my mother’s, then your dishwasher goes into overdrive after the feast. So many meals! It’s never fun to start your dishwasher up and locate cloudy glasses or still-dirty plates after conducting a load. Here’s how to keep your dishwasher performing at its very best.

Just use a dampened cloth to clean the dishwasher door panel. If your dishwasher’s inside is plastic, then the panel can blot. Here’s what to do:

Rinse off tomato sauces before loading the dishes to the dishwasher. You want to pre-rinse anything with berries, since tomatoes can cause permanent stains.

If you notice a green blot within your dishwasher, the dye in your detergent is most likely the culprit. Simply switch to a different detergent — think about a dye-free detergent.

Calcium and iron buildup can cause brown stains to form. Citric acid can get rid of these stains. You will want to empty the dishwasher and run a bicycle with the citric acid from the detergent cup. Then run another empty cycle with detergent.

Cloudy spots in your glasses may be the end result of hard water. You will understand that hard water is your problem if a cloth dampened with vinegar rubs away the muddy movie. To remove the cloudiness, you’ll need to run back your dishes through on a normal cycle, adding white vinegar to the last rinse cycle. You are going to need a liquid rinse agent to protect against the cloudy filming going forward.

Maintenance for your own detergent . Both liquid and powder automatic dishwashing detergents work well. If you opt for a powder detergent, make sure you keep your box closed and in a dry place (which is not beneath your damp kitchen sink, where most people store our dishwasher detergent) If your detergent seems caked, it will not dissolve well — so it will not wash as effectively.

Don’t include more detergent than what’s called for on the box — even if your dishes appear extra dirty. A lot of detergent will leave a residue behind.

Strategies for efficiently loading the dishwasher:

It’s energy-efficient to load your dishwasher as full as you can. But for the best cleaning, you do not want your dishes to touch.

Delicates head on the top rack and heavy duty dishes (think pots, plates, utensils) should go on the base rack.

It’s best to put cooking utensils on the top rack rather than the burger bin. Make certain that the utensils are lying down.

For your very best cleaning, stagger your forks and spoons in the cutlery bin with a few grips up and down some — that way they do not nest together. Water can’t get in between forks and spoons if they are nested together.

Look within your dishwasher to figure out where the water sprayer comes outside, and then load so. You want to turn the soiled sides of these things toward the water. It’s best not to put super tall things in the dishwasher since they may block the sprayer.

Since Thanksgiving is one of the very few days of this year when folks bring out their silver, here is how to look after yours:

When possible, it’s best to hand-wash sterling silver and silver-plate flatware. That being said, silver can go in the dishwasher. If you are likely to use the dishwasher for your silver, then make sure you avoid placing any stainless steel in the load as well. Why? The compounds respond to each and can cause permanent damage to the endings.

Don’t run your silver during the dry cycle of the dishwasher. You should wash your silver hand since the heat of the dishwasher, along with any detergent residue, can leave your silver stained.
