Color Guide: How to Use Navy Blue

Color Guide: How to Use Navy Blue

Navy is the deepest blue and in its true form seems almost black. It gets its name in the uniforms of the British Royal Navy and is associated with uniforms, apparel clothing and other conventional sartorial choices.

Navy is an elegant and serious colour, and it arouses serious things like tradition, solidity and durability. It’s definitely a manly color. But it doesn’t have to be somber. Pair it with crisp white and you obtain a lively maritime feel — think yachting with all the Kennedys. Put it with bright colors — lime green, bright pink and bright yellow look good with navy — and you get something modern and vivacious.

Navy is extremely versatile and works in virtually every style of decor. Use it around the walls when you want to go dim but not quite black. Use it as a contrast against white trim and interesting architectural details. Use it as a way to provide a dull box depth and attention.

Its quite close relative, indigo, is often used interchangeably with navy and can be seen in several conventional designs and artwork. Conventional Japanese shibori fabric is quite near navy, and lots of Indian and South American layouts include it as well. As a result of this, it may go boho, eclectic and exotic as well.

Here are 24 examples of navy’s acrobatic abilities as a design anchor.
