Kitchen of the Week: Exquisite Artistic Backsplash

Kitchen of the Week: Exquisite Artistic Backsplash

A balance of functionality and artistry helped deliver this Austin, Texas, kitchen. The clients — a young couple with two kids — had different motives for the project. She wanted a room that felt artful and unique. He had been focused on practicality.

“They had the right-brain, left-brain thing moving,” states Heather McKinney, chief in McKinney York Architects. McKinney and project manager Brian Carlson worked closely together with the couple to create just the right mix, with a decorative glass backsplash and a clever eat-in design.

The kitchen stained glass backsplash, by local artisan Laura Garanzuay, immediately catches the attention. Garanzuay set up the whole thing by hand. A gorgeous bowl created with leftover glass pieces from the backsplash supplied an additional keepsake for those clients.

This shot, taken at a later time than a number of the subsequent photos, shows a dining table from the spouse’s family. McKinney and team gave it an update to your new kitchen, finishing the bottom portion in the exact same bright yellow paint used in Mini Coopers.

The couple needed a family-friendly kitchen design setup with numerous activity zones. The counter at the end constitutes the cleanup zone. The husband does a lot of the cleanup, so McKinney and her team set up the dishwasher along with the sink in a counter that is taller to accommodate his height.

The side of the island with the stove functions as the kitchen working side, whereas the other hand gives a social place for quick meals. Food used for cooking a large dinner enters the chef’s refrigerator, hidden in an 8-foot-tall walnut cupboard next to the stove.

The social side of the island includes a microwave, a small oven, and a little dumbwaiter that goes down to the garage for hauling up groceries. The refrigerator on the side of the kitchen is a “free-for-all” refrigerator — Mom puts extra food in here to the kids.
